Flutter vs React Native, which is better? For most Pakistani business apps, Flutter is the safer default: one Dart codebase, consistent UI on cheap Android phones and fewer third-party moving parts. React Native is better when you already have React web developers, need over-the-air updates, or want a web app sharing the same logic. Both build credible apps for Android and iOS.
Key takeaways
- Flutter wins on visual consistency and fewer dependency surprises; React Native wins on JavaScript talent and code sharing with React websites.
- React Native's New Architecture has been the default since version 0.76 (October 2024), closing much of the old performance gap.
- Build cost in PKR depends far more on scope and team than on framework; both are cheaper than two native apps.
- Microsoft CodePush was retired in March 2025; React Native teams now use Expo's EAS Update, Flutter teams use Shorebird.
Quick verdict: Flutter vs React Native, which is better?
There is no universal winner, but there is usually a clear winner for a given project. Our rule of thumb after building cross-platform apps for clients in Pakistan and abroad:
- Choose Flutter if you are starting fresh, want the same look on every phone, care about smooth animations on low-end Android, and have no in-house JavaScript team.
- Choose React Native if your company already runs a React or Next.js website, your developers know TypeScript, or you need to push small fixes to users without a store update.
- Choose native (Kotlin and Swift) for apps built around heavy AR, complex Bluetooth hardware, or platform features that appear on day one of each OS release.
That is why our own app development team defaults to Flutter but keeps React Native in the toolbox. The shorter version of the native question is in our FAQ on Flutter or native.
Side-by-side comparison table
| Factor | Flutter | React Native |
|---|---|---|
| Backed by | Meta, with a large community | |
| Language | Dart | JavaScript / TypeScript |
| How UI is drawn | Own rendering engine (Impeller) | Real native platform components |
| Compilation | Ahead-of-time to native code | JavaScript engine plus native modules (JSI) |
| Look across devices | Identical on Android and iOS | Follows each platform's native look |
| Performance | Very smooth UI, predictable | Much improved with New Architecture |
| Over-the-air updates | Shorebird (Dart patches) | Expo EAS Update (JS bundles) |
| Web reuse | Flutter web, less suited to SEO sites | Shares logic and skills with React web |
| Talent in Pakistan | Growing quickly | Larger pool via React web developers |
| Best for | New business apps, MVPs, branded UI | Teams already on React, content apps |
What changed recently
Two engine-level changes make older comparisons outdated. React Native made its New Architecture the default in version 0.76, replacing the asynchronous JSON bridge with JSI, a C++ interface that lets JavaScript call native code directly, plus the Fabric renderer. On the Flutter side, the Impeller engine replaced Skia and, according to Shorebird's architecture comparison, became mandatory on iOS from Flutter 3.29, removing the shader-compilation stutter early Flutter apps were known for.
Over-the-air updates
Microsoft retired CodePush on 31 March 2025, so React Native teams now rely mainly on Expo's EAS Update. Flutter, being compiled, needed a special interpreter for patches, which Shorebird provides. Neither tool can update native code or framework versions over the air, so a store release is still needed for bigger changes.
Cost in PKR: which is cheaper in Pakistan?
Framework choice moves cost less than people expect. Both share most code across Android and iOS, which is the real saving over building two native apps. Published ranges from IDT Pakistan apply to either framework:
| App scope | PKR range |
|---|---|
| Simple app | 300,000 – 800,000 |
| Medium app with custom backend | 800,000 – 2,500,000 |
| Complex app with payments, real-time features | 5,000,000+ |
Agency rates also overlap: most Pakistani app developers listed on Clutch show USD 25 to 49 per hour, whatever the stack. Where the framework does change the bill:
- Existing React team: React Native can be cheaper because your web developers can contribute and share validation, API and state logic.
- Custom, animated UI: Flutter usually takes fewer hours, because one rendering engine means fewer per-platform fixes.
- Dependency upkeep: React Native apps often rely on more third-party native packages. As a rough planning view, expect a little more upgrade work each year.
- Hiring later: If you plan an in-house team in Lahore or Karachi, check local availability for your chosen stack before you commit.

Which is best for your business type
| Business / app | Our pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Startup MVP, no tech team | Flutter | Fast to both stores, one consistent UI |
| Ecommerce store app | Either | Flutter for custom UI; React Native if site is React |
| Food delivery (customer, rider, kitchen) | Flutter | Three apps, one language, stable maps and GPS |
| Clinic or salon booking app | Flutter | Simple flows, polished look on budget phones |
| News or content app | React Native | OTA updates and web logic sharing |
| SaaS with web dashboard in React | React Native | Shared TypeScript models and API client |
| Field sales or offline ordering | Flutter | Good offline storage, predictable on low-end devices |
| AR, IoT or heavy hardware | Native | Direct access to platform APIs |

Who will maintain this app in three years? If the answer is your own React web team, React Native often wins. If it is an agency or a new hire, Flutter's single toolkit and fewer moving parts usually cost less over time.
Using both together
You can run both, but rarely in one screen. The realistic options are:
- Separate apps, separate frameworks. For example, a React Native customer app maintained by your web team and a Flutter rider or staff app built by an agency. This works when the apps share only a backend API.
- Add-to-app. Both frameworks can be embedded into an existing native app, so a legacy Kotlin or Swift app can gain new Flutter or React Native screens gradually.
- Migration. Rewriting from one to the other in stages, usually starting with the least-used screens.
Running two cross-platform frameworks inside one app is technically possible through native host code, but it doubles build tooling and app size. We do not recommend it for Pakistani SMEs. Whatever you choose, the backend, admin panel and CRM integration stay the same, so the decision is reversible later at the front end only.
How to decide in one week
- List your must-have features
Mark any that touch hardware, maps, payments or offline use.
- Check your team
Note who knows JavaScript, Dart or neither, and who will maintain the app.
- Build a two-screen spike
Ask your vendor for a quick prototype of the hardest screen on a budget Android phone.
- Compare total cost
Include year-two upgrades, not just the build.

Frequently asked questions
Which gives faster results, Flutter or React Native?
For a new team starting from zero, Flutter usually reaches both stores slightly faster because one toolkit covers UI, navigation and rendering. A team that already knows React can be faster with React Native. As a planning estimate, a focused MVP takes 8 to 12 weeks in either framework; scope and approvals matter more than the choice.
Which is cheaper in Pakistan?
Neither is cheaper by default. Pakistani market ranges and agency hourly rates are similar for both. React Native saves money if your React web developers can share code; Flutter often saves hours on custom UI and per-platform fixes. Both cost less than separate Kotlin and Swift apps for the same features.
Can I run both at the same time?
Yes, as separate apps sharing one backend, or by adding screens from either framework into an existing native app. Mixing both inside one app is possible but adds build complexity and app size, so we advise against it for most businesses. Pick one per app and keep the API framework-neutral.
Is React Native still slow compared to Flutter?
Much less than before. The New Architecture, default since React Native 0.76, removed the old asynchronous bridge that caused most lag. Flutter still tends to deliver smoother complex animations on low-end Android phones, but for forms, lists and typical business screens, users rarely notice a difference.
